Invitation wording examples

What to write on an invitation, for every kind of event: copy an example, adapt it, or have the writer draft one with your details.

The anatomy of any invitation

Whatever the event, good wording answers six questions in the order a guest asks them: who is inviting me, to what, for whom, when, where, and how do I reply. Everything else, such as dress code, gifts and parking, is secondary and can go at the bottom or on a separate details card.

  1. Host line: “Together with their families”, “Please join us”, “You're invited”.
  2. Occasion: “to celebrate the marriage of”, “for Maya's 7th birthday”.
  3. Guest of honour: names, set largest.
  4. Date and time: include the day of the week; formal cards spell it out.
  5. Place: venue name, then street and town.
  6. Reply: who, how, and by when.

Formality is set mainly by two things: whether numbers are written as words, and whether the request line is “the honour of your presence”, “the pleasure of your company” or simply “join us”. Pick one register and keep it all the way through.
